To cushion the effect of the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Total Upstream Nigeria Limited with its partners have joined forces together to support people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Lagos with bags of palliatives.

Disclosing this during the presentation of 755 bags of relief items to representatives of people living with HIV at the secretariat of Nigeria Business Coalition against AIDS, General Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, Total Upstream Ltd, Mr. Wokoma Ajukura, said Total Upstream and partners saw the need to provide support for people living with HIV at this time due to the challenges confronting them in terms of assessing the need treatment and drugs and the challenge of eating well to enable the drugs work well.Ajukura, who represented the Managing Director, Mr. Mike Sangster, said the decision to support those living with HIV is based on the vulnerability of the people living with the virus and the fact that Lagos is on lockdown, thus the decision to support them with some welfare palliatives such as food items and livelihood support to enable them to comply with the stay-at-home order.In her remarks, Group Managing Director, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Mr. Bala Wunti, represented by Supervisor Community Relations, Mrs. Bunmi Lawson, said “this action is in line with the company’s goals, which is touching lives in many positive ways.”While welcoming the dignitaries, Executive Secretary Nigeria Business Coalition Against AIDS (NiBUCAA), Gbenga Alabi, commended the various partners for the initiative and consistent support of NiBUCAA in its various advocacy programmes.

Also, Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, said the initiative is a welcome development that deserves commendation and adoption by other corporate organization at this time.

Meanwhile, Cycology Club has donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Eti-Osa COVID-19 Isolation Centre jointly set up by the Lagos State government and Young Presidents Organisation (YPO) for the treatment of coronavirus patients in the state. The club also provided palliatives to street sweepers in Lagos to cushion the effect of the lockdown on the beneficiaries.

The Club Captain, Tunde Laoye, said the organisation had to extend the palliatives to the street sweepers to encourage them to continue to carry on their task during this lockdown. Over 200 1kg bags of rice, beans and garri, as well as salt and vegetable oil, were donated to the street sweepers, who applauded the club for the gesture.

Also, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Secretary of the club, Yejide Taiwo, said though the club often reaches out to the vulnerable in the society as part of its CSR, it became particularly necessary to assist the street sweepers who, since the lockdown, have continued to keep the streets and the environment clean for others.
